Who creates title sequence's - where do they get their ideas?
HISTORY

The likes of Saul Bass and Kyle Cooper have set the highest of movie title standards and as you'll see from this list, many graphic designers have clearly been influenced by them, while creating a new breed of iconic and culturally relevant movie title sequences of their own. Saul Bass was an American graphic designer and Academy Award winning filmmaker, best known for his design of motion picture title sequences. Bass became widely known in the film industry after creating the title sequence for Otto Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm (1955). The subject of the film was a jazz musician's struggle to overcome his heroin addiction, a taboo subject in the mid-1950s. Bass decided to create an innovative title sequence to match the film's controversial subject. He chose the arm as the central image, as it is a strong image relating to heroin addiction. The titles featured an animated, white on black paper cut-out arm of a heroin addict. As he hoped, it caused quite a sensation. Bass once described his main goal for his title sequences as being to ‘’try to reach for a simple, visual phrase that tells you what the picture is all about and evokes the essence of the story”.

PRESENT

Box Trolls -

We were given a typeface designed by LAIKA’s Josh Holtsclaw. It was a challenge to track the type through scenes and maintain legibility. The solution was to make the tracking very simple and keep the motion linear, with words screened in the background.
There was sensitivity from the beginning about readability and giving equal weight to the credits visually. One thing my career has taught me is that the more you try to get fancy with elements, the harder everything is to balance. If the style of the artwork were simpler we could have pushed the text design further in terms of movement and layout, but it’s difficult to combine complex backgrounds with ornately treated text and not lose legibility or design integrity.

In both this title sequence and your previous work on ParaNorman, there is a sequence in which you give a behind-the-scenes look at how the characters and environments are made. Why are these behind-the-scenes looks so important to you?

Analysis - High School : Youth drama

Romeo and Juliet

4. Art of the title

The two title sequences which I analysed was: "Too Many Cooks" and "Ping Pong Summer." Too Many Cooks"is a dark comedy short that originally aired as a special during Adult Swim's "infomercials" block in October 2014. It was written and directed by Casper Kelly and produced by Williams Street Productions. While I watched the title sequence for Too Many Cooks I noticed that they were very creative, as in they included the name of each character whilst their faces were on the screen collaboratively. There was also animated parts in the title sequence which seemed as if it was for children.

The second title sequence which I analysed was "Ping Pong Summer" which is an American comedy. Its about a 13 year old Rad who goes on a summer vacation to Ocean City , Maryland with his family. Experiencing lots of things for the first time , he finds a mentor for one of his obsessions, ping pong. The title sequence for Ping pong summer was short in comparison to Too Many Cooks. They also introduced the characters in a complete different way - Presented their names with a plain background. Also the people which where behind the making on the american comedy film were acknowledged too for example: casting , costume designer , associates etc.

Both "Too many cooks" and "ping pong summer" have completely different ways of laying out the title sequence. I gathered that Ping Pong Summer included the directors etc whereas Too many cooks didn't. But with "Too many cooks" they introduced the characters/ actors in a simpler way, which made it easier to acknowledge which character is which.

Genre - Teen drama film

What is genre?

Genre is a style or category of art, music, or literature.

Denoting or relating to a style of painting depicting scenes from ordinary life, typically domestic

situations, associated particularly with 17th-century Dutch and Flemish artists.

What is a teen drama film?

teen drama is a type of drama series with a major focus on teenage characters. The genre was relatively non-existent during the first 45 years of television. It came into prominence in the early 1990s, especially with the popularity of the Fox series Beverly hills, 90210. After the show became a success, television writers and producers realised the potential for this new genre to reach out to a previously ignored demographic. In the past, most series that maintained a focus on teenagers had been sitcoms, while adolescents in drama series were usually part of a larger ensemble that included adults and children.

The first teen-oriented shows did not call themselves teen dramas. One of the earliest was the single-season soap opera Never Too Young, which aired from 1965 to 1966. As the late 1960s and early 1970s progressed, younger viewers began to find relatable characters on more daytime soaps. In 1967, Love is a Many Splendored Thing premiered and quickly became a hit with teenage audiences. It was soon followed by All My Children in 1970 and The Young and the Restlessin 1973.
